How do fungi get their food?

Fungi are heterotrophic organisms, which means they obtain their food by absorbing nutrients from other organisms. Fungi use specialized structures called hyphae to secrete digestive enzymes into their environment. These enzymes break down organic matter into smaller molecules, which can then be absorbed by the hyphae.

Some fungi are decomposers, which means they obtain nutrients from dead or decaying organic matter. These fungi play an important role in breaking down organic matter and returning nutrients to the soil. Other fungi form mutualistic relationships with other organisms, such as plants or algae, in which both organisms benefit. For example, mycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic associations with the roots of plants, helping the plants to absorb nutrients from the soil in exchange for carbohydrates produced by the plant. Some fungi are parasites, obtaining nutrients from living organisms, and some fungi are predators, capturing and digesting other small organisms such as nematodes.
